The P1 Rotterdam finals, which took place yesterday, were highly anticipated by padel fans! Facing off in both the women’s and men’s finals were the top two pairs in the world.
However, the expected balance in the matches did not occur.
In the women’s final, Ari Sanchez and Paula Josémaria avenged their semifinal loss from the P1 Madrid by defeating Gemma Triay and Cláudia Fernandez with a double 6-4. Despite the close score, the world No. 1 duo controlled the match from start to finish. With this victory at P1 Rotterdam, Paulita and Ari secured their seventh title of the year and further solidified their position as world leaders.
While the women’s final was one-sided, the men’s final saw even greater dominance. Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia were in “steamroller” mode, not allowing any response from Ale Galan and Fede Chingotto. With a double 6-2, Coello and Tapia took the lead (6-5) in their head-to-head with Galan and Chingotto, consolidating their world-ranking leadership.
The Argentine Cannons
This P1 Rotterdam brought two of Argentina’s rising padel stars to the spotlight – Alex Chozas and Leo Augsburger. The Argentine duo, playing only their second tournament together, was the sensation of the event, reaching the semifinals. They were the only unseeded pair to make it this far, knocking out teams like Di Nenno / Juan Lebron and Jon Sanz / Coki Nieto.
Sofia Araújo Falls Again in the Semifinals
Sofia Araújo, Patrícia Ribeiro, and António Luque were the Portuguese representatives in the main draw of the Dutch tournament.
Sofia Araújo and Marta Ortega repeated their semifinal achievement from Madrid last week but couldn’t overcome the second seeds, Gemma Triay and Cláudia Fernandez, losing 4-6 and 3-6.
Patrícia Ribeiro and Carmen Castillon made it through the qualifiers but were eliminated in the first round, losing 5-7 and 1-6 to Ksenia Sharifova and Lucia Martinez.
António Luque, along with his Spanish partner Toni Bueno, also advanced from the qualifying rounds but lost in the second round to Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia, 1-6 and 5-7.
Next week, the Premier Padel circuit heads back to Spain for the P2 Valladolid!
